We were recommended by a previous client of ours to friends who were looking for a cinema experience and multi-room system in their 8th floor apartment in East London. After initial meetings a specification was agreed including lighting control in the main areas as well as integrating existing devices such as motorised blinds and ceiling a fan.  The end result was a well integrated audio and video solution fulfilling the client's needs.

After considering the clients requirements 6 zone multi-room audio system, shared AV sources to 2 rooms, flexible lighting control, reliable networking and integration of previously installed devices, a specification was designed and agreed. One factor above all was that all systems must be simple to operate - we knew straight away that Control4 would be at the heart of the system.

The Living Area system took a lot of research and exploration in order to find the best solution as the largest viewing screen possible was desired.  The client was flexible about the sofa position if it meant a good cinema experience, so options of motorised wall brackets, hidden out of view when not used, were the original idea. After further exploration, a projector and motorised screen was considered and designed, but limitations to the space meant this was not ideal.  We proposed the idea of utilising a TV but within a drop-down lift and designed the speaker locations and TV mechanism which was the perfect solution.

What makes this home smart?

The fully integrated Control4 system can control all of the technologies inside the home, even when away from home, via the iPhone or iPad app. The Control4 on-wall keypads were retrofit in some rooms to give simple control of the lighting, blinds, fan and AV system. An Amazon Alexa device in the main living space gives voice control of the system.

A 'House Off' button by the front door ensures all lights and AV systems are off when leaving and can also control blinds if required.

The specification for the whole-home system includes:

  • + Seamless Integration with an Infra-red controlled Fan/Light

  • + Grouped control of the QMotion roller blinds in 3 of the rooms

  • + Wireless Control4 handsets for control of all the above systems

  • + Retrofit Control4 control via on-wall keypads

  • + Structured data and TV cabling

  • + Hidden Control4 lighting controllers for new lighting scheme

  • + Denon Heos streamed audio system with discrete in-ceiling speakers

  • + Ultra High Definition video distribution via Blustream devices

The client was especially pleased with the end result, as can be seen by the quote below:

We are delighted with the home automation system that Alex created for us. He achieved exactly what we were looking for when we first envisaged the project. We love that the whole system is so easy to use via the Control 4 remote, mobile app and even Alexa!

Alex has a real ability to think outside the box. The placement of the TV in the lounge with its wall of windows was a real conundrum and the final solution he came up with is absolutely perfect. It really has the wow factor too!

Alex is extremely helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Since the original installation, he has continued to come up with new ideas and suggestions to improve the original solution even further.

We have no hesitation in recommending Alex to anyone looking for a simple to manage but comprehensive home automation system
